Cheap Camping Tips

by Hannah Walton aka The Cheapskate Mom

One of my favorite things about summer is camping : camping is cheap, educational, eco friendly and most of all – fun.  Camping requires  a healthy do it yourself attitude – after all ….you kind of have to when you're in the middle of nowhere with limited supplies! When I first got into camping, I was intimidated by my complete lack of equipment – I quickly found that camping equipment is one of the mainstays of neighborhood yard sales and was able to accumulate a virtual campground's worth of equipment for around $50.00 (my greatest score to date remains a north face tent from Craigslist that I purchased for $25.00).

I found some wonderful cheapskate camping ideas for things you can make yourself to make camping a little bit more posh!  I can't wait to get started on these awesome tips….Thanks to everyone for allowing me to share these awesome projects!

Make Your Own Citronella Candle
One drawback to camping is bug bites. Sure, a good old fashioned itch or some calamine lotion will do in a pinch – but why not kick it up a notch with a homemade citronella candle – great for your summer patio too. Thanks to Positively Splendid, you can make your own citronella candles! Read More…

Make Your Own Travel Spices
As a huge fan of spices, I know the sadness of being stuck in the woods with a can of beans, a spoon and no chili pepper. Never fear – The Handy Hausfrau is here with this BRILLIANT idea – make a travel spices set for camping out of a vitamin container. I am in love. Read More…

Camping Shower Bag
Oh, the agony of traipsing across the campground clutching an assortment of showering products , wrapped up in a towel – praying you won't drop it. I was thrilled to find this portable shower bag you can make (if you can sew) from Our Busy Little Bunch – it's super stylish and very, very handy. Read More…

Keep Your Camping Toilet Paper DRY
Speaking of agony, I also know the pain of a rainstorm + toilet paper left out = not fun for an ocd-ish gal like myself…. I'm just not that great at toughing it out….that's why I love this idea from the wonderful Alaska Outdoor Journal – Keep your toilet paper in a coffee can or better yet – the more newfangled plastic coffee tubs (because, as Gary from AOJ points out the newer coffee tubs have handles for carrying or hanging on a branch) – and you can kiss your stranded-in-the-middle-of-the-woods without toilet paper fears adieu!
