Cheap I Spy Game from a Nalgene Bottle and more!

by Hannah Walton aka The Cheapskate Mom

As a fairly active hiker and kayak-er (although not so much kayaking right now as we are living on quite a budget!) I have acquired a mini army of nalgene style water bottles over the years (both as gifts, leftovers from the lost and found at the restaurant where I worked forever and even a few bottles I bought myself)….So,  I started looking for new ways to breathe life into my old nalgene water bottles. I'm happy to share some of the great ideas I found and tried.

Nalgene Bottle + Couscous = I Spy Bottle Game : I had some old couscous I never got around to using and some little trinkets I didn't know what to do with. I simply poured the couscous into my water bottle, added some trinkets, screwed the top on real tight and voila – a perfect DIY I Spy toy – on the WAY cheap. Obviously, due to the small objects – not safe for little guys – but still – an awesome and cheap I Spy game :)

More Ideas for re-purposing your old Nalgene style water bottle :

Store important paperwork on a boat : Nalgene bottles make great "wet bags" for boating.

Fill with sand and use to weigh down a beach blanket : wonderful picnic weights!

Make a waterproof first aid kit for camping

Make a hot water bottle by filling with hot water

Add a glow stick or battery powered tea light = instant tea light

If you use a laundromat – use these to keep detergent in so you don't have to lug a heavy container back and forth

Travel pet food container

Protective case for your glasses

Fill with sand or rocks for outdoorsy bookends and door stops

The perfect Geo-caching Container

Rustic Tooth Brush Holder

Instant rain gauge

Drill a hole in the cap, fill with sand and some food and turn them into a rather artistic ant farm for the kids

Make into a piggy bank

Rustic flower vase

I love your idea of using unsafe water bottles for I Spy bottles! Your other ideas are great, too! Thanks for linking up with Montessori Monday. I featured your post at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/LivingMontessoriNow

I love the idea… I have lots of old water bottles I could do this with.
