Sewing…. Money saver or spender?

I admit, I keep thinking about my previous post, and just how much I wish I knew how to sew… Then I started thinking about how much money I would save if I learned….
Curtains, shower curtains, throw pillows, new clothes, blankets, GIFTS, oh man…. the list of things I could be sewing goes on and on… (this is of course in my imagination….who knows how productive I would actually be if I were armed with sewing skills and a machine.
It’s funny, I’ve always kind of considered the people who know how to sew and the people who don’t to be two different kinds of people. Sewing seems so mathematical, so technical, so intimidating to me… The few times I’ve ventured into a Joann’s fabrics , I’ve been overwhelmed by the hundreds of buttons, zippers, types of fabric (i never knew you could buy swimming fabric!!), and all of the folks casually browsing the aisles who, unlike me, seem relaxed and not at all confused!
So, if you sew… What do you say? Do you save money? LOTS of money?? Or do you spend more money? Even if you do spend more money, if you are able to use these things in your home and for gifts, it seems like maybe you offset the cost of the sewing hobby in money saved in other areas…..
I look forward to getting some feedback on this!
